Will Schwemm is 10 years old and the youngest finisher of the Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon. The MN RUN Series reached out to him to hear some more of his story. Check it out.

MNRS: How Was your race?

Will: It was great! I set my half marathon PR.

MNRS: What was your favorite part?

Will: The first part is exciting. I wasn't nervous. I was just ready to get going. I get a burst of speed when the other runners cheered me on. Everyone started going faster on the last mile and then it's just a sprint in the last quarter mile. That's my favorite part.

MNRS: What is your goal for 2019?

Will: To set a PR at every race and every distance. I had a goal to beat my old time at the 12.5k Trail Mix and did that last month. Next week I have a 10 mile trail race and want to beat my time from last year. I also want to set the 1-mile record for my school.

MNRS: When did you start running?

Will: I started running when I was 8, but not that far and not that fast. I would go for a run after school my dad and I would talk about our day. I did my first races when I was 9. My mom was doing marathon training and I thought I could do some of that too. This was my 13th race and second half marathon.

MNRS: What inspires you to run?

Will: I watched Eliud Kipchuge in "Breaking 2" and want to run like him.

I want to show everyone that kids can run too. You don't have to be that fast to start. You'll get better at it quickly. You can start with a 5k and go up from there. Sign up for a race, and get in some training miles and do it.

It's something you can do for your whole life and you'll have better endurance for other sports.
